Chameleon wins 3rd successive European Home Energy Monitor Award

For the third year in a row, In-Home Display Manufacturer Chameleon Technology has won the Home Energy Monitor of the Year Award in the 7th Annual Smart Energy UK & Europe Awards, this time for it’s “Accessible Design” In-Home Display.

The Smart Energy UK & Europe Awards are part of Europe’s most established Smart Energy Summit, held in London on January 28th. Chameleon’s winning In-Home Display (IHD4 AD) is an “Accessible Device” – a specifically designed IHD to allow the UK’s 14 million vulnerable consumers to access the benefits of smart meters and smart technology.

Chameleon’s Managing Director, Mike Woodhall said, “We are ecstatic to have won the European Home Energy Monitor Award for the third time in a row. It is a tremendous endorsement of our design and technical skills. Our team has worked very closely with special interest groups to research and understand the variety of needs of the UK’s 14 million vulnerable consumers, allowing us to create an IHD which is useful, relevant and most importantly accessible to as many vulnerable users as possible. Smart metering and smart technology will transform our lives and we believe everyone should have access to these benefits.”

Chameleon has a track record of engaging minority user groups with its IHD designs. Chameleon won the Home Energy Monitor of the Year Award in 2015 for its IHD with integrated Pre-Payment functionality, a revolution for the UK’s 10.8 million pre-payment meter customers. In 2014 Chameleon’s mass rollout IHD achieved the top honour – the only IHD in production to have won the award.  This IHD was also applauded for it “Inclusive by Design” principles.

Almost one third of adults have some kind of impairment or are older, which could affect how easily they find it to engage with smart meter technology. Vulnerable consumers require a specific “Accessible Design” In-Home Display to enable them to enjoy the benefits of smart meters. Chameleon’s “user-centred” design approach considers, and is sympathetic to, the impairments most likely to make using an IHD difficult. The IHD4-AD is intuitive and easy for all to use and understand.

Technical Director Tim Boyle expands on Chameleon’s technical capabilities, “Chameleon’s In-Home Displays are all interoperable and integrated with leading global smart meter manufacturers. This is essential for an Accessible IHD. Firstly, it minimises costs as this IHD could be utilised by any UK utility. Secondly, if a Vulnerable Consumer changed suppliers or moved premises, they wouldn’t need to learn to operate a new IHD.”

The Smart Energy UK & Europe Awards are part of Europe’s most established Smart Energy Summit, and this year the event was attended by over 500 industry professionals from Europe and around the world. The awards were held on January 28th at the Lancaster Hotel, London as part of the conference and exhibition on January 28th and 29th, 2016.

Chameleon achieves three ZigBee Smart Energy 1.2a certifications

Chameleon Technology is proud to announce that with the certification of IHD2-TS, it is one of the first in the world to achieve ZigBee SE 1.2a certifications for three of its In-Home Displays.

ZigBee Smart Energy (ZSE) 1.2a is the defined standard for the mass rollout of Smart Metering in Great Britain and is used as the smart metering home area network technology for SMETS2. ZSE 1.2a includes significant additions that have been introduced to meet the needs of smart metering deployments in Great Britain.

Chameleon’s SEDv3, IHD1v2 and IHD2-TS have all achieved ZigBee SE 1.2a status. All products had previously been certified to ZSE and were enhanced to support ZSE1.2a. Tim Boyle, Technical Director at Chameleon, said “achieving ZSE 1.2a certification for three of our products demonstrates our technical and commercial readiness to provide In-Home Displays for the mass rollout of smart metering”.

Smart meters are becoming the new must-have for smart consumers

Smart Energy GB study finds 84% of consumers with Smart Meters recommend them.

Smart Energy GB, the national campaign for the smart meter rollout, has published the second Smart energy outlook, the largest independent barometer of national public opinion on energy and smart meters. The report finds high levels of satisfaction, control and energy-savvy amongst those who have already upgraded to their smart meter.

Every household and microbusiness in Great Britain will have the chance to upgrade to a smart meter at no additional cost as part of the national digitisation of the retail energy industry taking place between now and 2020. Smart meters will bring an end to estimated bills and show people what they’re spending in pounds and pence via a handheld display.

September 2015’s Smart energy outlook, carried out by Populus on behalf of Smart Energy GB showed:
• More than eight in ten (84%) of consumers with a smart meter would recommend them to a friend, neighbour or relative
• Nearly four in five (79%) of consumers with a smart meter believe that their energy bills are accurate, whereas only 59 per cent of those without feel the same
• Three quarters of respondents (75%) with a smart meter understand their energy bills compared with 56 per cent of those with traditional meters
• Nearly eight in ten (79%) of consumers with a smart meter have taken steps to try and use less energy such as turning off lights, turning their heating down or changing the way household appliances are used
• Nearly seven in ten (69%) of respondents with a smart meter said that they felt more conscious about the energy they use at home

Commenting on the findings, Sacha Deshmukh, Chief Executive of Smart Energy GB said, “It’s great to see such a huge percentage of smart meter customers, 84 per cent, so enthusiastic about the experience that they would recommend one to their friends. And many, many more report feeling more empowered and taking control over what they’re using around the home.”

BEAMA Consumer Access Devices Guide

The UK smart metering rollout places a strong emphasis on consumer benefits and the pace of market demand for consumer engagement solutions in the UK is greater than anywhere else in the world.

The key to the development of this market and the more advanced functionality is the availability of real time consumption and energy price data. It is through the Consumer Access Device (CAD) that this data will be made available into the Consumer Home Area Network (C HAN).

The BEAMA Consumer Access Device Working Group (CAD WG), of which Chameleon are contributing members, have created the Paper “Consumer Access Devices: A BEAMA Guide”. This paper outlines a blueprint for the CAD and use cases for the application of data from the Smart Meter Home Area Network (SM HAN). It also considers the routes to market for CADs and what this means for consumers and progressive innovation in the connected homes sector.

The members of the CAD WG have considerable expertise in the connected homes and smart grid sector, and range from smart meter, in home display, CAD, and low carbon technology manufactures, including heating and hot water systems and controls.
