For the third year in a row, In-Home Display Manufacturer Chameleon Technology has won the Home Energy Monitor of the Year Award in the 7th Annual Smart Energy UK & Europe Awards, this time for it’s “Accessible Design” In-Home Display.
The Smart Energy UK & Europe Awards are part of Europe’s most established Smart Energy Summit, held in London on January 28th. Chameleon’s winning In-Home Display (IHD4 AD) is an “Accessible Device” – a specifically designed IHD to allow the UK’s 14 million vulnerable consumers to access the benefits of smart meters and smart technology.
Chameleon’s Managing Director, Mike Woodhall said, “We are ecstatic to have won the European Home Energy Monitor Award for the third time in a row. It is a tremendous endorsement of our design and technical skills. Our team has worked very closely with special interest groups to research and understand the variety of needs of the UK’s 14 million vulnerable consumers, allowing us to create an IHD which is useful, relevant and most importantly accessible to as many vulnerable users as possible. Smart metering and smart technology will transform our lives and we believe everyone should have access to these benefits.”
Chameleon has a track record of engaging minority user groups with its IHD designs. Chameleon won the Home Energy Monitor of the Year Award in 2015 for its IHD with integrated Pre-Payment functionality, a revolution for the UK’s 10.8 million pre-payment meter customers. In 2014 Chameleon’s mass rollout IHD achieved the top honour – the only IHD in production to have won the award. This IHD was also applauded for it “Inclusive by Design” principles.
Almost one third of adults have some kind of impairment or are older, which could affect how easily they find it to engage with smart meter technology. Vulnerable consumers require a specific “Accessible Design” In-Home Display to enable them to enjoy the benefits of smart meters. Chameleon’s “user-centred” design approach considers, and is sympathetic to, the impairments most likely to make using an IHD difficult. The IHD4-AD is intuitive and easy for all to use and understand.
Technical Director Tim Boyle expands on Chameleon’s technical capabilities, “Chameleon’s In-Home Displays are all interoperable and integrated with leading global smart meter manufacturers. This is essential for an Accessible IHD. Firstly, it minimises costs as this IHD could be utilised by any UK utility. Secondly, if a Vulnerable Consumer changed suppliers or moved premises, they wouldn’t need to learn to operate a new IHD.”
The Smart Energy UK & Europe Awards are part of Europe’s most established Smart Energy Summit, and this year the event was attended by over 500 industry professionals from Europe and around the world. The awards were held on January 28th at the Lancaster Hotel, London as part of the conference and exhibition on January 28th and 29th, 2016.
